About Artist

JOAN B. ZONE

Red cows? Blue rabbits? Joan Zone often paints in a whimsical style, portraying animals and people in scenes that capture her emotionally, going beyond the image itself to create a dynamic between the viewer and the art. She paints subjects with delightfully disparate colors, actions, and sizes: orange sheep, oversized birds. Some of her work reflects the strong influence of her environment: a snow-covered field, flying fish, the countryside, or a romantic European street. As both a viewer and an artist, Zone finds such whimsical art fun, creative, and engaging.

Although Zone was never exposed to art at her home, she loved drawing during classes at an Upstate New York three-room schoolhouse she attended.  At age 22, she made her first art purchase at the Louvre where she bought two blue and pink period Picasso prints of a couple. From that time on she was drawn to and mainly bought fanciful paintings of people. She greatly admires Picasso, Tobias, and Deberdt, but Chagall is her favorite artist, and she has been most influenced by his art.

Joan is a licensed psychologist and has been painting in watercolors since 1999;  recently, she has been using mixed media, creating a textured background and allowing her freer expression.  Painting has become a sort of bliss for her, totally absorbing.
